GrapheneOS – When an App Is Slow
- User has been using GrapheneOS for about a year and is satisfied with its security and privacy features.
- OsmAnd (OpenStreetMap for Android) runs noticeably slower on Pixel 8 with GrapheneOS compared to other Android devices.
- The slowdown is caused by GrapheneOS's hardened memory allocator, which creates overhead when scrolling maps (constant data loading/discarding).
- The fix is to disable the hardened memory allocator on a per-app basis via Exploit protection settings.
- Disabling this setting improves OsmAnd's speed but reduces security; user accepts this trade-off since OsmAnd seldom loads from the internet.
