- US sanctions on the International Criminal Court (ICC) led to the loss of Microsoft services for the chief prosecutor, prompting the Dutch government to reduce reliance on US-based software.
- The Dutch government launched the DAWO project (Digital Autonomous Work Environment for Government) to replace Microsoft systems with alternatives built around NixOS.
- NixOS was chosen for its reproducible, immutable package management, allowing up to 90% of configurations to be reused across deployments and compatibility with older hardware.
- Three service providers (SSC-ICT, DICTU, DUO-ICT) are overseeing the rollout, with eight municipalities currently running trial programs.
- The first stable version of the platform is expected by the end of 2027, and similar moves away from US-based software are underway in Germany, Denmark, and France.
