Show HN: Thoreau BASIC – What if BASIC hadn't gone out of fashion?
- Thoreau BASIC is a modern BASIC language with 64-bit memory, 24-bit graphics, TCP/IP, HTTP, GM/GS wavetable with MIDI/WAV/FLAC/Opus playback, complex arithmetic, multicore PARFOR, and native x64 JIT compilation.
- It runs as a normal Windows program, standalone EXE, or directly from UEFI firmware without an operating system, and can be packaged as bootable EFI applications.
- New file commands include GETFILES, SELECTBOX, STATEWRITE/STATELOAD, FLUSH, FILECOMMIT, FILECOPY, CRC32, and TEXTSTATS, with case-sensitive masks and full paths up to 4095 bytes.
- The UEFI build boots on x64 machines using GOP graphics, firmware or raw HID keyboard, mouse with fallbacks, networking via firmware or SNP stack, and HDA/Azalia PCM sound where available.
- Pixel Prose is included as an example program, and the project page with downloads is on itch.io.
