New York Has Sued Kalshi for Running Illegal Gambling Operation
2 months ago
- New York Governor Kathy Hochul and Attorney General Letitia James have filed a lawsuit against KalshiEX, LLC (Kalshi) for operating an illegal gambling business through its prediction market platform.
- Kalshi allows users to bet on the outcomes of events including sports, culture, and elections, but the Office of the Attorney General found it to be an unlicensed gambling operation.
- The platform exposes New Yorkers, including those under 21, to financial and personal risks, violating state laws that require a minimum age of 21 for mobile sports betting.
- The lawsuit seeks a court order to stop Kalshi's operations, require the company to forfeit illegal gains, pay fines, and provide restitution to harmed users.
- This action is part of broader enforcement efforts by New York officials, including previous lawsuits against Coinbase, Gemini, and Valve, and an executive order banning state employees from using prediction markets.
Fired Tesla Manager Says Full Self-Driving Cars Were 'Rolling Hazards'
- A fired Tesla manager, Javier Medrano, is suing the company for unlawful retaliation after raising concerns about safety defects in Full Self-Driving testing.
- Medrano claims Tesla's refusal to provide extra resources or staff made robotaxis 'rolling hazards on public streets.'
- The lawsuit alleges that an understaffed manager-to-operator ratio (1:38 instead of the stated 1:15) led to safety failures, including a crash mishandled while Medrano was asleep.
- Following the incident, Medrano was fired for trying to escalate safety issues and prove resource withholding, and he seeks reinstatement and damages.
- Tesla's Full Self-Driving software has also faced criticism for failing basic driving tasks, with ongoing NHTSA investigations and concerns about the robotaxi rollout.

Mornings in Cupertino Have the Aroma of Napalm Once Again

- Apple is suing OpenAI over alleged trade secret theft and mass poaching of employees, with at least 400 former Apple employees hired.
- Steve Jobs historically used aggressive anti-poaching tactics, including threatening emails to Adobe and Palm, which sometimes crossed legal lines.
- Tony Fadell comments that it is Apple's job to retain its talent, not to blame poachers.
- The lawsuit draws comparisons to Apple's failed 1990s 'look and feel' lawsuit against Microsoft, which was seen as a desperate move.
- John Ternus may be driving the lawsuit, channeling Steve Jobs' aggressive style, while Tim Cook is more diplomatic.
- Apple is unlikely to settle; it wants full discovery to uncover the alleged 'iceberg' of trade secret theft.

- Dillon filed a lawsuit in June against Knox County, the sheriff, and four deputies for excessive force and rights violations.
- Police reality shows face criticism for exploiting individuals and encouraging risk-taking for television content.
- The sheriff's office withdrew from the show shortly before the lawsuit, but declined to comment on the case.
- Similar lawsuits have occurred, including a $2.5 million settlement in Texas over a staged arrest for 'Live PD'.

- OpenAI is accused by The New York Times and The Daily News of lying about its ability to search for copyrighted works in its training datasets and customer chat logs.
- OpenAI previously claimed it couldn't search its training corpus and that doing so would be burdensome and raise privacy concerns.
- In a deposition, an OpenAI engineer revealed the company had internally searched its training corpus and maintained a database of 78 million de-identified ChatGPT conversations.
- OpenAI also allegedly implemented a 'Bloom' filter as part of 'Project Giraffe' to detect and record regurgitation of copyrighted content after the lawsuit was filed.
- The plaintiffs claim OpenAI made it difficult to obtain information by submitting a heavily redacted, 'unusable' chat log sample and allegedly deleting outputs and substituting logs.
- The plaintiffs are asking the court to discipline OpenAI, exclude its submitted evidence, and make OpenAI pay legal fees, while OpenAI denies the allegations, citing user privacy and fair use.
Abnormal Response to Anthropic Lawsuit

- No customer has ever purchased Abnormal's products thinking they were Anthropic, as their businesses differ: Abnormal focuses on cybersecurity, while Anthropic builds general-purpose AI models.
- The lawsuit demands disgorgement of all revenues, earnings, profits, compensation, and benefits, which Abnormal describes as shocking.
- Abnormal emphasizes their mission of trust, integrity, and innovation, rejecting claims of deception and asserting they built their technology independently.
- Abnormal does not rely on Claude or third-party AI for threat detection; they use specialized behavioral AI models for cybersecurity.
- Abnormal has been a major user and advocate of Anthropic, spending significant amounts on their services and promoting AI education.
- Abnormal calls for resolving the issue privately to avoid distraction and maintain focus on their respective missions for the global good.
