- AI companies like Anthropic, OpenAI, Meta, and DeepMind are hiring large numbers of professors, especially computer scientists, depleting university faculties.
- Professors are drawn to industry by high salaries, access to massive computing resources, and the chance to work on cutting-edge research that matters.
- The exodus shifts the center of AI research from academia to private companies, reducing open publication and locking research behind closed doors.
- Universities face shortages of professors to teach the next generation, and students lose opportunities to work with star researchers.
- Corporate research may accelerate innovation but also risks becoming a gatekeeper of science, potentially stifling broader scientific progress.
