- Nueva Pescanova has abandoned plans for the world's first commercial octopus farm after a five-year legal battle and global protests.
- The project faced criticism due to octopus intelligence and sentience highlighted by the documentary 'My Octopus Teacher', making mass farming unpalatable.
- Campaigners view the abandonment as a landmark win against commercial octopus farming, with bans passed in US states like Washington and California, and bills proposed in Spain, Mexico, and Chile.
- Studies show octopuses feel pain and distress, and farming causes stress, aggression, and cannibalism, raising ethical concerns.
- The company cited 'business and regulatory considerations' for halting the project but may pursue it elsewhere in the future.
