- Apple's Icon Composer tool allows icons to become multi-layered, expressive artworks that adapt to user input and appearance settings.
- Icons are now software that are assembled on the fly by the operating system using resources like bitmaps, vectors, layers, and effects, rather than being static images.
- This shift creates compatibility issues, as newer operating system versions may have effects that older versions do not support.
- The concept of an icon has become like Schrödinger's icon, with its appearance varying based on runtime conditions such as light/dark mode or device angle.
- Increased expressiveness and variability in icons may undermine their primary purpose: quick recognizability and memorability through simplicity and consistency.
- Apple's Phone app example shows how icons now have multiple appearances depending on settings, diluting the impact of consistent color as a mnemonic tool.
- The author, as an archivist, finds it challenging to preserve icons that are no longer static and have runtime-dependent forms.
