Every new UK home should have air conditioning, say Liberal Democrats
2 months ago
- Liberal Democrats propose that all new UK homes be built with air conditioning or other cooling systems to address the climate crisis.
- Passive cooling measures like planting more trees in residential areas are also necessary.
- Air conditioning should be mandatory in essential public buildings such as schools and health facilities.
- The UK has experienced hot weather alerts, with temperatures reaching 32°C in London and severe drought conditions.
- Industry estimates show the number of UK homes with air conditioning has doubled in the past three years, but still only covers about 4 million of 30 million homes.
- Polling indicates that 28% of people bought fans or air conditioning during recent heatwaves, and 26% felt unwell or faint.
- Lib Dem spokespersons Tim Farron and Gideon Amos emphasize the need for government action to ensure homes are fit for future heatwaves.
- A study led by Imperial College London linked recent heatwaves to about 2,700 deaths, with over 40% attributed to human-caused global heating.
India's monsoon rains in danger as UN chief warns planet is 'on fire'
- A strengthening El Niño is forecast to bring hotter, drier conditions across much of the world, endangering India's monsoon.
- UN Secretary General António Guterres warns that El Niño is 'adding fuel to a planet already on fire' and pushing the world into 'uncharted territory'.
- The World Meteorological Organization predicts increased drought, floods, and wildfire risks around the Indian Ocean basin, with below-normal rainfall for India.
- Marine heatwaves and record warm Pacific waters are intensifying, leading to predictions of a 'super El Niño'.
- Governments are urged to prepare for heat, drought, and floods, while Guterres calls for a stop to fossil fuel expansion.
80k people flee as wildfires spread in France and Spain
2 months ago
- Over 90,000 people have fled wildfires in Spain and France, with Spain declaring a national emergency and France ordering total evacuation of a major holiday spot.
- France's Cap Ferret peninsula is being evacuated due to an intense, unpredictable wildfire that has burned over 12,500 hectares of forest.
- Spain declared its first wildfire national emergency as two blazes merged near Madrid, with extreme heat and dry conditions fueling the fires.
- Both countries sought EU help; officials described the situation as unprecedented and a 'perfect storm' of high temperatures and strong winds.
- About 800 firefighters and water-bombing planes are battling the fires, but conditions remain highly dynamic and unfavorable.
- Climate breakdown is cited as a factor, increasing the frequency and severity of extreme weather events and wildfires.
- There have been 29 major forest fires in Spain by mid-2026, compared to an average of 9 per year in the past decade, burning over 114,796 hectares.
- Arrests have been made in Spain related to causing the fires, with suspects ignoring bans on heavy machinery use.
UK has 'no future' if it fails to act on ecosystem collapse
3 months ago
- UK MPs demand full publication of a classified spy agency report warning that ecosystem collapse abroad will have catastrophic national security consequences, including severe food shortages within five years.
- The government has only released a redacted 14-page summary despite the report detailing risks of food shortages, price hikes, migration, political destabilization, and possible war due to human-induced climate crisis and over-exploitation.
- MPs criticize the government for failing to link national security threats to climate and biodiversity collapse while cutting overseas aid and climate finance budgets, contrasting with increased defense spending.
- The unpublished report, involving the Joint Intelligence Committee, highlights risks from collapses in ecosystems like the Amazon rainforest, which could shift from a carbon sink to a carbon source.
- Publication of the full report was blocked by Downing Street last October and again at the Cop30 summit, with insiders attributing the suppression to political advisors.
- Despite claims of being "laser-focused" on nature protection, the UK has slashed climate assistance to poor countries, removing ringfenced nature spending and affecting projects globally.
