Norway Salmon
- Norway bred a docile, fast-growing Atlantic salmon in the 1980s, solving earlier aggression issues.
- The government's 'Project Japan' successfully marketed salmon sushi to Japan, creating global demand.
- Salmon farming became Norway's second largest export after oil, transforming coastal economies.
- Environmental consequences include algal blooms, oxygen depletion, and chemical buildup from open-net waste.
- Rising 'production fish' with wounds and diseases raise ethical concerns about fish welfare.
- Innovations like closed 'Egg' systems aim to reduce impacts but are expensive.
- Debate continues between industry lobby and scientists over environmental limits and sustainability.
Beyond Bad Output

- AI writing improvement does not solve fundamental problems like environmental cost, exploitation of human creators, and centralization of power.
- Training and running AI models produce significant carbon emissions, worsening the environmental impact of creative industries like game development.
- AI systems appropriate human-created work without consent or compensation, threatening the livelihoods of writers and artists.
- AI training methods undermine copyright law, leading to legal battles where creators fight for their rights.
- AI concentrates power in wealthy tech companies that control creative infrastructure via proprietary black-box systems, contradicting the idea of democratizing creativity.
- AI devalues creative labor by treating it as an inefficiency to optimize, harming how writers and artists are compensated and valued.
- The core issue is protecting an ethical vision of creativity that respects human expression and uses technology to enhance, not replace, human capabilities.

- China's Chang'e-6 mission returned samples from the lunar far side, containing microscopic fragments of water-bearing CI chondrite meteorites, providing evidence that water-rich asteroids delivered water to Earth.
- The Moon's lack of atmosphere preserved these pristine meteorites, which account for 30% of its meteorite collection, helping scientists understand the origin of Earth's oceans.
- NASA's X-59 supersonic jet reduces sonic booms to 75 decibels (like a car door slam), potentially overturning the ban on overland supersonic flight, but it burns significantly more fuel and releases pollutants that damage the ozone layer.
- Future lunar missions include Chang'e-7 (2026) searching for water ice and Chang'e-8 (2028) testing in-situ resource utilization, with an International Lunar Research Station planned for the 2030s.
- During a U.S. government shutdown, NASA went silent while key milestones occurred (Artemis II assembly, Mars rover discoveries), highlighting challenges in sustaining long-term scientific endeavors.
Space datacenters proposed by Musk and Bezos 'catastrophic' for planet
2 months ago
- SpaceX, Blue Origin, and other companies have proposed millions of orbital datacenters, which would release pollutants like black soot, rare metals, and aluminum oxides, potentially causing catastrophic atmospheric changes.
- Pollution from satellites and rockets burning up upon re-entry is accumulating in the stratosphere, with unknown effects on the ozone layer and climate, potentially increasing ultraviolet radiation exposure.
- A petition filed by environmental groups (Peer, Earthjustice, DarkSky International) calls on the FCC to pause licensing for space datacenter projects, arguing they violate federal law and lack environmental impact assessments.
- The number of active satellites has grown from 1,400 in 2015 to about 15,000 currently, with projections of up to 100,000 within a decade, exacerbating pollution from launches and satellite re-entry.
- Space datacenters would require vast rare metals and resources, create light pollution harming wildlife, and raise legal questions under the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA).
- Companies like Cowboy Space Corporation and SpaceX have filed FCC applications with minimal environmental mitigation promises, lacking detail on addressing cumulative harms from millions of satellites.
Heat adds to strains on areas with data centers
3 months ago
- Heat waves increase electricity demand for data centers, straining power grids and worsening local air quality.
- Data centers use energy-intensive cooling systems and backup diesel generators, which can harm air quality during heat waves.
- Lowell, Massachusetts residents oppose a local data center due to environmental and health concerns, leading to a moratorium on expansion.
- Data center electricity use is growing locally but not nationally, though large power consumers pose grid reliability risks.
- Community tensions over data centers have escalated, including protests and police involvement at public meetings.
German Button Maker Searched Rivers of American Midwest for Valuable Shells
3 months ago
- German button maker John Boepple immigrated to the U.S. after discovering freshwater mussel shells from the Midwest could produce valuable pearl buttons.
- Boepple settled in Muscatine, Iowa, in 1891, starting a button industry that boomed by producing 1.5 billion buttons annually by 1905, bringing economic prosperity but devastating local mussel populations.
- The pearl button industry used clammers to harvest mussels with techniques like crowfoot hooks, processing shells into blanks and polishing them, but it declined due to overharvesting and the rise of cheaper plastic buttons.
- Overharvesting and habitat destruction from river engineering and pollution severely reduced freshwater mussel species, though early conservation efforts, including Boepple's work at a biological station, began in response.
- Boepple's story ended tragically when he reportedly died from an infection after cutting his foot on a mussel, and today, freshwater mussels remain endangered, but their history offers lessons on resource management.
