Finland to Cut Cable Lines Carrying Up to 70% of Russia's Foreign Web Traffic
2 months ago
- Finland's grid operator Fingrid will stop servicing power pylons carrying fiber-optic cables to Russia starting next year.
- The fiber-optic lines carry 60-70% of Russia's total international web traffic.
- The decision follows Russia halting electricity exports in 2022, making maintenance economically unviable.
- Russian telecom providers are negotiating with private Finnish firms to find alternative routing options.
- The EU recently sanctioned nearly 90 additional Russian banks, cutting off more than half of Russia's internationally connected financial institutions.
Finland is a high-context society that loves defaults
2 months ago
- High-context cultures communicate through implicit cues like body language and status, while low-context cultures rely on explicit verbal rules.
- Finland exemplifies a high-context culture with standardized systems, over-documentation, and resistance to change, leading to predictable interactions.
- Consequences include employees unable to handle non-standard situations, minimal market competition, and a culture where rules define reality rather than allow exceptions.
- Living in such a culture requires comfort with routine and a default way of doing things; the author questions compatibility for immigrants.
Electric aircraft makes historic flight from Sweden to Finland
3 months ago
- An electric plane arrived at Vaasa Airport, Finland, from Umeå, Sweden, as part of a 5,600km emissions-free tour.
- The tour, co-arranged by Oulu University of Applied Sciences, marks the first time a fully certified electric aircraft has crossed open sea areas.
- The flight faced challenges, including a lightning strike in Sweden that damaged the charging system, but continued smoothly after repairs.
- The two-seater Elektra Trainer, designed as an electric plane, consumes less than half the electricity of converted traditional aircraft and has a battery life of about 2.5 hours.
- Electric aviation could revitalize smaller airports and enable cross-border flights for up to 20 passengers, but requires better batteries and charging infrastructure.
Finland's last analogue landline phones go silent after 150 years
3 months ago
- Finland ended analogue landline phone calls after nearly 150 years, joining other countries in shifting to digital infrastructure.
- The retirement marks the global transition to fibre optic cables for internet and voice calls, replacing copper-wire technology.
- Finland's fixed-line network began in the 1880s, but mobile technology and digital advancements have largely replaced landlines.
- Elisa, the last major telecom with copper-wire landlines, celebrated the end with a final call between its CEO and a transport agency head.
- Copper-wire phones are analogue because they transmit calls as continuous electrical signals, while fibre optics use light pulses for faster data.
