In Praise of Inconvenience: The Hidden Costs of a Convenient World
2 months ago
- Living in the 'convenience regime' prioritizes ease, but may erode what makes us human.
- Digital shortcuts trade real-world friction for ease, losing deep, embodied satisfaction.
- The convenience paradox: optimizing life reduces actual living—we become curators, not creators.
- Difficulty is a feature of human experience, not a bug; it provides challenge, discovery, and physical engagement.
- Practical antidotes include choosing inefficient paths, questioning convenience, and embracing mindful friction.
- Deliberately choosing slower, harder paths can be a compassionate act toward oneself.
AI as teleportation
- The text uses a teleportation thought experiment to explore AI's societal effects, highlighting both benefits (e.g., global commerce, family time) and losses (e.g., serendipity, physical health, in-between moments).
- Albert Borgmann's concept of a wooden stove as a 'focus' illustrates how removing inconveniences can eliminate important secondary social and cultural functions.
- Applying the analogy to AI: reading summaries may save time but lose the journey of marinating in ideas; AI explanations may reduce social interaction; vibe coding can speed up design but disrupt muscle memory and discovery.
- The key takeaway is to be mindful of preserving 'good friction'—the inconveniences that foster deeper engagement, creativity, and connection—even as AI removes barriers.
Fix Like No One’s Watching — overreacted

- Some technical debt, such as inadequate data structures or sloppy code, is highly visible and causes bugs, performance issues, and feature difficulties.
- Another insidious technical debt involves slow test suites, untrusted deployment scripts, rigid abstractions, or rigid unit tests that subtly discourage improvements and innovations.
- These friction-causing issues often go unaddressed because they seem minor, yet reducing friction is crucial as it can determine a project's success or failure.
- The author urges to fix technical debt proactively, as if no one is watching, since its impact can be transformative.
