- The traditional advice to specialize is being challenged by a new era where generalists, empowered by AI, can solve problems across multiple disciplines.
- AI enables one person to carry a problem further by gaining competence in adjacent areas, reducing the need for handoffs between specialists.
- Useful generalists are those who can stay with a problem, understand it deeply, and test solutions, rather than just knowing a little about many things.
- Generalism is not about AI making everyone an expert; it requires judgment to distinguish good work from convincing rubbish.
- Organizations should form teams around outcomes, using generalists to test assumptions before committing full specialist resources.
- The smallest useful unit of progress has changed: one person can now create enough momentum to make a problem worth organizing around.
- Specialists remain essential, but AI shifts when their expertise is needed, allowing more precise use of their time.
