- The Optimistic Provide optimization reduces IPFS content publishing time from over 13 seconds to under 1 second, a 10x speed improvement.
- It uses network size estimation via routing table refresh to predict the 20 closest peers, allowing early record storage and walk termination.
- Predictive termination and early return (after 15 confirmations) eliminate waiting for unreachable peers, cutting latency and network overhead by 40%.
- Record availability remains comparable to traditional methods, with reprovide sweeps ensuring accuracy in the background.
- Limitations include reliance on accurate network size estimates and cold-start delays, with proposed fixes like peer filtering and cached estimates.
- Optimistic Provide is default in IPFS Kubo v0.39.0, but only 17% of nodes use it; updates and further improvements are recommended for full benefits.
