- The Fn key originated in 1984 with IBM's PCjr to simulate missing keys on smaller keyboards, using internal key remapping.
- Over time, Fn's role expanded beyond key resurrection to include computer operations like volume and brightness control, with little standardization.
- Apple's Fn/Globe key evolution has been problematic: it gained OS-level functions like dictation in 2012 and became a proprietary system shortcut key in 2021, creating confusion.
- Third-party keyboards often lack compatibility with Apple's Globe key, leading to inaccessible shortcuts and user frustration.
- Apple's inconsistent implementation across macOS and iPad, plus conflicting shortcuts, highlights a lack of coherent strategy for modifier key management.
- The proliferation of modifier keys around the spacebar creates ergonomic and cognitive strain, hindering fluid keyboard use.
- Apple could learn from past solutions, such as repurposing Caps Lock, to simplify keyboard design and restore user trust.
