- Most open source projects are maintained by a single unpaid person, leading to overload and silent PR closures.
- To build a resilient project, ensure more than one person can respond, make decisions public with reasons, and create an easy on-ramp for contributors.
- Maintainer burnout and loss of interest are common; structural changes like delegating and narrowing scope can help sustain motivation.
- AI-generated contributions are increasing volume; set clear rules requiring disclosure and understanding, and avoid dismissing work without explanation.
- Plan for succession by documenting processes and security measures; if leaving, archive the repo or clearly state the project's status to avoid confusion.
