- Habit formation is the shift from deliberate to automatic decision-making through repeated behavior.
- A Kyoto University team developed a rapid habit formation method in mice to study behavioral and neural transitions.
- Two distinct neural circuits manage different aspects of habits: one determines whether a behavior becomes a habit, and the other controls how much the habit is executed.
- The first circuit involves neurons from the anterior cingulate cortex to the retrosplenial cortex, weakening during habit formation.
- The second circuit involves the lateral orbitofrontal cortex to the central striatum, explaining individual differences in habit execution.
- Artificially manipulating these pathways can selectively promote habit formation or alter execution levels.
- Habit formation is more complex than mere repetition, showing significant individual differences in behavior frequency and volume.
