How much AI can a maintainer get away with using without losing their humanity?
- Open Source maintainers face increased workload due to a surge in AI-generated contributions, bug reports, and feature requests, straining small teams.
- The Renovate project, with only 3 core maintainers, saw a 60% increase in PR contributions in 2026 compared to prior years, plus larger PR sizes.
- Maintainers grapple with balancing AI tool usage for efficiency while preserving human empathy and personal communication with users.
- AI-assisted contributions can feel impersonal and disappointing to users, prompting ethical questions about outsourcing human interaction.
- The author calls for maintainer community input on sustainable practices, including AI usage limits, automated review tools, and whether to 'fight AI with AI'.
How to maintain an Open Source project
- Energy, not time or money, is the limiting factor in open source; focus on preventing maintainer burnout and community collapse.
- Recruit new maintainers frequently, prioritize existing maintainers' energy, and be kind to users—but not by doing everything they ask.
- Automate boring tasks like CI, releases, and documentation to save energy.
- Post about the project on social media or start a dedicated platform to attract users and contributors.
- Document development processes to help new maintainers and your future self.
- Take regular vacations and communicate your absence to users and maintainers.
- Develop a taste for when to say no to features as the project matures.
- Find people excited about the project, invite constructive criticism, and balance it with positive feedback.
- Avoid burnout by not overworking; you have no SLA to your users.
- Proactively recruit maintainers by trusting active contributors with merge privileges early.
Building Pi With Pi

- Pi, part of Earendil, remains Mario's project, and the author reflects on using Pi to build Pi.
- LLM-generated issue descriptions, often inaccurate but confident, become inputs for Pi sessions, altering the issue tracker's role.
- Issues lacking the human's original voice, filled with plausible but wrong diagnoses, create extra maintenance work.
- The author prefers issues condensed to observed facts (e.g., a stack trace) rather than guesses or LLM-generated slop.
- LLMs over-engineer fixes, adding complexity by locally handling edge cases instead of maintaining global invariants.
- The issue tracker sees high volume: ~3,145 external issues/PRs in 90 days, 26% of issues and 8% of PRs are ultimately addressed.
- Open source faces pressure from increased code/projects, but without more maintainers, leading to fragmented effort and need for stronger collaboration.

- Maintaining a popular open source project is psychologically taxing due to the overwhelming volume of messages, issues, and pull requests—a phenomenon called the 'flood effect'.
- Attempts to manage the flood with 'inbox zero' tactics often fail because they don't allow for the thoughtful processing that community feedback deserves.
- The maintainer's role shifts from designing and coding to mostly reviewing contributions, which reduces time for creative work and leads to fewer organic new features.
- Working continuously on the same project for years is mentally draining; the author used to work in bursts and found that forced daily schedules reduce productivity.
- There is constant fear of losing technological leadership due to misalignment between the maintainer's vision and user expectations.
- Dealing with difficult people (assholes) in the community adds significant stress.
- A sense of futility can arise from the belief that software is ephemeral and will be replaced, contrasting with the desire to work on 'big ideas'.

- Redis was born in a playful, problem-solving environment during the creator's early web 2.0 career.
- Over time, the creator's role shifted from building Redis to maintaining it for reliability, security, and community contributions.
- The creator views coding as artistic expression and prefers to be remembered as a 'bad artist' rather than a 'good programmer'.
- Stepping back as Redis maintainer to focus on idea generation at Redis Labs and personal freedom, with no fixed plans.
- Yossi Gottlieb and Oran Agra will take over as maintainers, tasked with shaping a sustainable development model.
- The creator expresses gratitude to the community, companies (Redis Labs, VMware, Pivotal), and hopes his alternative vision for software development endures.
- Future plans include exploring hobbies, writing blog posts, and creating educational videos in Italian.
