A field day for Gleam's language server – Gleam v1.18.0 release
2 months ago
- Gleam v1.18.0 introduces language server support for record fields, including go-to-definition, find-references, and rename across modules.
- Type variables in functions, types, and constants can now be renamed via the language server.
- Renaming a module file automatically updates all its imports throughout the project.
- A new code action generates pattern match case expressions on function calls and their return values.
- JavaScript compilation is optimized by using data singletons, reusing a single instance for equivalent data structures to improve performance.
- The ambiguous pipe syntax that could compile to two(three)(one) is deprecated; a code action helps convert it to the explicit form.
- Git dependencies now support an optional path field for packages not at the repository root, and Hex rate limits are raised by using an API key via HEXPM_READ_API_KEY.
Solod 0.2: Networking, new targets, friendlier interop
2 months ago
- Solod v0.2 introduces a net package supporting TCP, UDP, and Unix domain sockets with Go-like API but without goroutines.
- New compilation targets include 32-bit platforms, WebAssembly (WASI), and freestanding bare-metal mode.
- C interop improvements include `//so:volatile`, `//so:thread_local`, `//so:attr` directives, type aliases, and numeric C types in `so/c`.
- Deadlines (SetReadDeadline, etc.) are added for blocking I/O; concurrency is still planned for future releases.
- Additional stdlib packages: `encoding/hex`, `uuid`, and arena memory management optimization.
- Diagnostics enhancements: `--track-source` for So source locations and optional `--check-nil` for nil-pointer checks.
56,000 lines of DOOM, in a language I made up
2 months ago
- bet is a small, real programming language designed as a contained experiment.
- It compiles to native code via LLVM, self-hosts, manages memory, and can run DOOM.
- The language uses arena allocation (called cribs) for efficient memory management in games.
- DOOM was fully ported to bet with over 56,000 lines, achieving bit-for-bit identical gameplay.
- The project was built with no prior research and gated solely by tests, without code review.
- It served as a joke, an experiment, and a learning experience, with no plans for further development.
Amber the programming language compiled to Bash/Ksh/Zsh
3 months ago
- Amber is a modern programming language that compiles to Bash and emphasizes type safety, runtime safety, and compile-time error detection.
- It features an ECMAScript-like syntax, interoperability with Bash scripts, and includes a standard library with useful functions.
- The language automatically generates documentation and ensures handling of potential failures for robust script development.
Tungsten – an expressive, fast programming language
3 months ago
- Tungsten is an object-oriented language designed for clarity and mathematical expression, with syntax that resembles whiteboard pseudocode.
- It compiles to native binaries via LLVM and GPU kernels via Metal, using a self-hosted compiler.
- Key features include first-class support for currency (dollars, cents, percentages) and units (meters, kilograms) with automatic conversion and dimensional analysis.
- Direct mathematical notation is supported, allowing code to read like textbook math with symbols like square roots and exponents.
- Syntax elements include defining classes with '+', methods with '->', and output with '<<', with explicit arity indicated by slashes.
- It offers exact decimal numbers by default, complex numbers up to 256-dimensional algebras, and GPU integration via '@gpu fn' for Metal Shading Language.
- Memory management includes shared allocations for CPU arrays and Metal buffers, enabling on-device attention mechanisms.
- The language reduces boilerplate with features like inline instance variables, block passthrough, and accumulator methods.
- It includes compile-time math modes (strict, precise, fast) and ensures performance optimizations like SIMD and branch elimination.
- Tools include a package manager, interactive REPL with plotting, and open collaboration for preview development.
Flexible Metaprogramming with Rhombus
- Rhombus is a new programming language combining Racket's metaprogramming with Python-like syntax.
- It uses indentation-based syntax with ':' for blocks and '|' for branch separation, similar to Python.
- Rhombus supports immutable data structures by default, using tree-based lists for efficient operations.
- The language features advanced for loops with reducers (e.g., math.product) for concise code.
- Macros in Rhombus use syntax objects with metadata for error handling and hygienic/non-hygienic options.
- It allows user-defined grammatical contexts and extensions, supporting language-oriented programming.
- Rhombus includes gradual typing with annotations for error messages and performance optimization.
- The language is backed by the Racket project, licensed under MIT/Apache 2.0, and suitable for academic and professional use.
