- The US House voted to pass the Sunshine Protection Act to make Daylight Saving Time permanent year-round.
- The bill now goes to the Senate for approval before potential presidential signature, though its chances are unclear.
- Proponents argue it eliminates clock changes, reducing sleep disruption, seasonal depression, and economic costs.
- Opponents cite economic and health concerns, especially for farmers facing later sunrises and students commuting in darkness.
- President Trump supported the bill, calling clock changes costly and unnecessary, while states have varying readiness to adopt it.
- The issue lacks clear partisan lines, with public opinion divided on preferring permanent standard time vs. Daylight Saving Time.
- Past attempts, like in 1974, were reversed due to unpopularity, but lawmakers continue revisiting the idea.
