The Elevator Button Problem
- The elevator button problem highlights hidden depths in user interface design, where pressing 'up' to go up is learned folk wisdom, not universal knowledge.
- Extra information, like the elevator's current floor, can confuse users into thinking it's needed to decide, when only confirmation of the request is required.
- Directional buttons (up/down) help optimize elevator routes by allowing the system to know passenger direction, reducing wasteful stops.
- A single call button simplifies the interface but can make the system less efficient by forcing unnecessary stops for opposite-direction travelers.
- Alternative designs, such as entering destination floor via keypad or touchscreen, eliminate ambiguity but may introduce confusion due to behavior bias.
- Usability trade-offs exist: simple interfaces may hamper efficiency, while advanced systems can overcomplicate for novices.
Stop helping!

- Don't print long help text with an error message; it can hide the error from the user.
- Users, especially less experienced ones, may overlook the error message if buried in a large help output.
- Long help text is inconvenient on small screens or for users who already know most of the commands.
- It's better to simply remind the user how to access help (e.g., 'Try --help') rather than displaying all help text.
- Help should be displayed only when explicitly requested by the user.
Free software scares normal people
- Normal people struggle with video conversion due to confusing formats not compatible with QuickTime or Facebook.
- Handbrake has a powerful but intimidating UI, typical of free software that deters non-expert users.
- The author built MagicBrake, a simplified front end for Handbrake that performs one common task: converting video to a small MP4.
- MagicBrake has a single button and hides advanced features, appealing to those who only need basic conversion.
- Criticisms about limiting functionality are addressed by noting power users can still use full Handbrake.
- The analogy of obscuring TV remote functions with tape is used to justify simplifying complex tools.
- Opportunities for such simplifications exist in media servers, audio editing software, and network tools.
- 80% of users need only 20% of features; hiding the rest increases productivity and happiness.
What’s an Icon in 2026?

- Apple's Icon Composer tool allows icons to become multi-layered, expressive artworks that adapt to user input and appearance settings.
- Icons are now software that are assembled on the fly by the operating system using resources like bitmaps, vectors, layers, and effects, rather than being static images.
- This shift creates compatibility issues, as newer operating system versions may have effects that older versions do not support.
- The concept of an icon has become like Schrödinger's icon, with its appearance varying based on runtime conditions such as light/dark mode or device angle.
- Increased expressiveness and variability in icons may undermine their primary purpose: quick recognizability and memorability through simplicity and consistency.
- Apple's Phone app example shows how icons now have multiple appearances depending on settings, diluting the impact of consistent color as a mnemonic tool.
- The author, as an archivist, finds it challenging to preserve icons that are no longer static and have runtime-dependent forms.
